Clean and tin the pot case prior to soldering and twist the wires together and solder them together as a group. Heat the solder on the pot case and the bundle of wires at the same time. As soon as the solder flows, stop and hold for 10 seconds. Done. I've bought some nice looking LED potentiometers from Ebay. They look like this. Oct 26, 2015 · You should also have some basic hand tools, such as wire strippers, needle-nose pliers, wire cutters, and something to hold the wire in place while a solder joint cools (Photos 2 and 3). There are tools sold specifically for holding wires and parts, available through an electronics supply house. testing- find the best resistance for your circuit before soldering a non-variable resistor in permanently. Normally, potentiometers are wired as variable voltage dividers: connect +V to one side, connect the other side to ground, and the middle pin will output a voltage between 0 and +V (fig 2).
Potentiometers with a metal body are usually grounded by soldering a ground wire directly to the metal body. Switches typically have a ground lug for connecting a ground wire. Ground wires should be insulated whenever possible to avoid short circuits. Oct 21, 2004 · When I put a cap on the neck tone control, I just cut the wire running from the middle tone pot (which had the sole capaciter) to the neck tone pot, then soldered a cap from the #1 lug (where the wire from the middle tone pot was going) to the top of the potentiometer. It wasn't that hard.

I rewired my Mandobird with new pots and a new cap. It didn't turn out well, so I just unsoldered everything and I am "re-rewiring" it. I have a good wiring diagram and my soldering skills are generally OK, but one thing I have trouble with is soldering a ground wire to the flat back of a pot and getting it to hold solidly. Soldering is the go-to method the pros use for joining wires and electrical connections, and you can make solid connections for your project car too. Whether wiring in a switch or taking power from a wire without cutting it, soldering the connection will ensure a trouble-free connection. Watch our DIY video to learn how.
Oct 21, 2015 · If all you have is a bread board then you can not use it on this component unless you solder wires to it and then push the wires into the bread board. Nov 06, 2009 · The solder itself will provide a perfectly adequate electrical and mechanical connection. Twisting or wrapping wire at a joint makes it very difficult to get apart if you need to rework something. If you tin both the lugs and the wire ends you probably won't need to do anything but hold them together and apply the iron until the solder flows.
